OnTheThrottle.TV's Mat Mladin series continues as Mat tells us about the degree of mental concentration it takes to get on top and continually battle at the front, and win.
Keep these coming guys. I love listening to Mat remenisce, glad OTT was able to put this together.

Like Mat said the tapes don't lie! I have the last 5 seasons recorded(only cause of Mat), and I'm going to watch'em again.
OTT... there should be an award handed out for you great interviews. Keep them coming!

I respect the guy and it's interesting to hear what he has to say and how he thinks but on the other side of coin I have a hard time when he judges other riders that kept advancing thru the ranks of racing. He stuck in a single series for almost his entire career and if you listen closely you can detect a slight bitterness with him because of that. We all know what Spies is capable of at a higher level but with Mladin it will always remain speculation at best.

This is the best Mladin bit to date. Absolutely fascinating!

A2birdcage... I guess we have to agree to disagree. Remember Mat didn't start his career in the States, unlike most of his competitors (ie: Spies, Bostrom, Hayes...). He has won an Australian championships before the AMA. For what ever reason he never went to World SBK or MotoGP, we can only speculate. In an interview I remember Mat commenting on the $$$, why would he go to a series that won't pay him for what he's worth, have you ever heard of a basketball player taking a cut in pay to show how great he is and personal satisfaction.
Ask Neil Hodgson and Spies for that matter if Mat could compete against a higher level of racer.
Also in my opinion, it isn't bitterness but arrogance. And I mean arrogant in the best way possible, cause he is the BEST the AMA has seen and will see in my lifetime.
A2birdcage you're truly entitled to your opinion... I just wanted to add my 2cents.

Everyone has said it haven't they - just brilliant, well done. Have you thought about writing all this up as his autobiography ;-)

I, too, have the entire 05, 06, 07, 08 seasons on tape (DVD). And it's true with what Mat says in regards to the rubber band theory. He would continue to push the pace until Ben would let off. But there were a couple of rounds where Ben did the same thing to Mat. Especially during the 7 race win streak that Ben had in 08. I also thought it was very interesting with what he had to say about BB.

dead on birdcage.
If and buts are all fine on the internet, but fact is the guy didn't take the risk on the world stage, therefore he'll never be ranked as one of the greats.
I do sorta wished that I had some season on dvd, wouldn't mind seeing the season with Nick on the rc51...

Yeah.... just like Rossi he sucks too cause he has only raced in MotoGP. Put him on a GSXR750 and race against a few RC51. But no one would ever argue that he is "One of the Greats".
It's easier to yap on the internet about someones abilities then it is to go and race.

Rossi has suceeded at the highest level of motorcycle racing repeatedly. He has proven himself at all levels of the sport and no sane person would ever argue that he is not one of the greats. With Rossi there is no speculation. It's different with Mladin. There is no doubt he is talented but grouping him as one of the greatest riders of all time would be unfair to the guys that have actually proven they are great. AMA superbike racing is close to the very bottom of the professional racing world. Mladin is one of the greatest the AMA has seen, no doubt, but the world? Well, that remains to be seen.

And again your opinion. Rossi has never raced outside of MotoGP. We can only speculate that he would dominate in World SBK or a series so close to the bottom as the AMA. I will never argue that Rossi isn't "One of the Best"(cause I just love the man), but it p!sses me off when people have the nerve to say that Mladin couldn't be one. Cause he has proven to beat every champion that has went up against him. ie:Hayden, Spies, Bayliss....

I think Mladin would do well at the higher levels but we'll never be sure (unless he keeps racing). That's all I'm trying to say. If you can't agree with that then I don't know what to tell you.

A2birdcage... I liked sharing my point of view with you, it's to bad it can't be done over a coffee.
I do agree with your last comment.
